DESCRIPTION
The American College of Psychiatrists offers an award to honor an individual, or individual whose group has made major contributions to the understanding and treatment of mood disorders. The nominee is chosen from among those scholars and scientific investigators who have displayed excellence in research and who are devoted to assisting people suffering from mood disorders.

The award is presented at The College's Annual Meeting where the recipient is invited to present a featured lecture summarizing her/his work. The Awardee receives an honorarium and a commemorative certificate, as well as travel and hotel expenses. In 2003, the Annual Meeting will be held February 26 to March 2 at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, Vancouver, Canada.

Mood disorders encompass those psychiatric disorders in which a disturbance of mood is the predominant feature, including depressive, dysthymic and bipolar disorders. These disorders affect many people throughout the world resulting in considerable suffering and disability. The College wishes to encourage and reward those who are dedicated to research targeted to improve the lives of those afflicted with mood disorders.
