DEAN AWARD COMMITTEE 2002-2003
ROLE OF THE BENEFACTOR

DESCRIPTION
The American College of Psychiatrists offers an award to honor an individual or a group who has made major contributions to the understanding and treatment of schizophrenic disorders. The nominee is chosen from among those scholars and scientific investigators who have displayed excellence in research and who are devoted to assisting people suffering from schizophrenia.

The award is presented at The College's Annual Meeting where the recipient is invited to present a featured lecture summarizing her/his work. The awardee receives the honorarium and a commemorative certificate as well as travel and hotel expenses. In addition, the Awardee is honored at a special luncheon. In 2003 the meeting will be held February 26 to March 2 at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, Vancouver, Canada.

The Stanley Dean Award was first given in 1962. The award was under the direction of The Fund for the Behavioral Sciences between 1962 and 1968. The College first presented it during the Second College Seminar, which was held in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1969. Eli Lilly and Company became the sponsor in 1997 by providing funds through an unrestricted educational grant in the amount of $5,000.

Schizophrenia is a serious brain disorder which affects people across all cultural, social, economic, ethnic and racial boundaries. About 150 out of every 100,000 persons will develop schizophrenia, about 1% of the world population. It is one of the most common yet devastating and enigmatic mental illnesses and is the cause of more hospitalizations than almost any other illness. We wish to encourage and reward those who are dedicated to research to improve the lives of those affected by this illness.
